Stolyline: Sakhi is about a special relationship between Suryakant Jagdale (Ashok Saraf), a widower in his 50s, who is forced into retirement and Nishi Surve (Sonali Kulkarni), a young woman caught in an unpleasant situation.
After losing his job, Suryakant returns to his village, Jatgaon. He wants to help the village youth but realises that his village has changed, and his ideas are not accepted. Dejected and disappointed, Surya meets Nishi, cheated by in-laws and rejected by her brothers, she is trying to end her life when Surya rescues her and gives her shelter. After discovering her singing talent, he encourages her and gets her enrolled in a singing class...
Sonali Kulkarni gives her best performance ever as a woman suppressed by the conditions. Ashok Saraf gives a strong performance by playing a role of a mere understanding friend who strives to give a new meaning to his Sakhi’s life, a woman who needs support, care and security. A relationship which is beyond friendship develops between the two.
